Oppose Torture

“A time comes when silence is a betrayal” – Martin Luther King

Dear Friend,

I have undertaken a project opposing torture across institutions of faith in the Austin area and across the United States. The focus of this project is a display of banners at multiple locations which read “Torture is Wrong”. Would you participate in this project? I will provide the banner and the installation. There is no financial commitment required.

In a November 11th 2005 statement, the National Council of Churches unanimously approved a resolution entitled, A Statement on the Disavowal of Torture.

“Torture, regardless of circumstance, humiliates and debases torture and tortured alike…it denies the preciousness of human life and the dignity of every human being by reducing its victims to the status of despised objects, no matter how noble the cause for which it is employed.”

When Edward R. Murrow first saw a concentration camp, he said "not every story has two sides". Torture has only one side. My ardent desire to ask people to think and act about this is completely apolitical and is at the very heart of how we treat each other as human beings.

Thank you for your consideration and time.
